Um. I knew how big it was and how un-green it is too! Thank you very much.
lindahl:

So yesterday I got on Google Maps to check out Bangor, Maine, as I just found out we will be going there for a wedding in September. I know zilch about Maine and have never been, so I wanted to see how close Bangor was to the coast.
As I tend to do whenever I’m on Google Maps or Google Earth or Wikipedia, I got slightly sidetracked. First I zoomed out to see how far Maine was from Indiana. Then I wandered over along the East Coast to see what else was close by, in case we end up making it a mini-vacation.
Somehow, I ended up in Canada, and to the east of Canada, I noticed the start of another large piece of land. Delving into my very limited knowledge of geography outside of the Midwest, I thought to myself, oh this is either Greenland or Iceland. Let’s check it out. This was when I made my discovery.
Greenland is flipping huge.
I consider myself somewhat intelligent. What I lack in brains I tend to make up for in my ability to memorize and retain information. So truthfully, I am somewhat shocked by my lack of awareness about this country. In the globe of Earth in my head, Greenland and Iceland are about the same size and both a little bigger than Texas. Apparently, our geography class in high school skipped over anything between North America and the Eastern Hemisphere.
I feel like Buster from Arrested Development when he thought the blue part on the map was land.
Fortunately, I am not alone. The friends I shared this new discovery with were equally uninformed, and when asked the question, “How big do you think Greenland is?” one even responded with, “Probably the size of Texas.” (On another note, they did not really give a shit.)
So unfortunately, I am alone in the fact that I’m a complete dork for finding this so interesting, and proceeding to Wikipedia “Greenland” for the next 20 minutes. (FYI, it’s the largest island that is not a continent and the total population is only 57,000.)
So…just in case you didn’t know…Greenland is big. How disappointed are you that you chose to read this post…
